South Asheville Cemetery

This cemetery is a very energetic place with a beautiful atmosphere. I encountered the gatekeeper in the form of a beautiful turkey upon entering. This Cemetery is located in south Asheville North Carolina. It began as a slave burial ground. The caretaker was a slave named George Avery. During the civil war Mr Avery joined the Union army and after the war returned to oversee the cemetery until he died in 1938. His monument is one of the 90 or so head stones that have names or dates. This is a 2 acre burial ground with around 2,000 African Americans buried here.
