INSCRIPTIONS TO SUCELLOS

These are the 11 inscriptions to Sucellos, the only ones we have found to this day.

Within you will find some history of the inscriptions. When it comes to the images, I did not want to run into copyright problems. so I drew the image representing the original image as best as possible. Some images will be missing because there is not a known image.

We have a worn Votive inscription made of white limestone dating from 201AD-250AD Found in 1882 at Mogontiacum (Mainz) Now in Mainz, Landesmus (Mainz State Museum) in Germany. It mentions Jupiter and an alternate spelling to Sucellos as some Scholars Suggest. Along with Genius Locus which is a protective spirit of a place. it’s usually depicted in religious iconography as a figure holding attributes such as a cornucopia, patera libation bowl or a snake. It is thought to be the remains of a pillar base.

DEO SVCELLO AND SILVANO TI (BERIVS) GPI

This is a heavily worn sandstone votive altar located in Worms, Germany, found in 1844. It has trees on the sides and an inscription to Sucellos and Silvanus. It dates from 170AD-200AD it is now located in the Museum of the city of Worms.

VICHY

SV [CELL] VM PROPITIVM NOBI

This is a Pot made from terocata, it has a Medallion on the face of it with Sucellos standing with his hammer in the left hand and the pot in his right. along with an image of a wolf and some trees. found in 1885 now in Paris, Musée Guimet . This is missing fragments but the Inscription is intact and helped us identify others like this from another site now located at Musée de Picardie. this dates to around 200 AD.

ANCEY MALAIN

DEO SVCELLO AREAM RESVS TOROGILLI V (OTVM) S (OLVIT) L (IBENS) M (ERITO)

This is a limestone votive Inscription found in 1988 at the ancient site (Civitas Lingonum) modern-day Ancey, France. Dating around 121AD – 230AD it’s in rough shape – burnt around the sides and broken. Its thought to be a base to a statue.

This is a silver hexagonal finger ring with an inscription on the front. found in 1875 in a city moat in Yorkshire England. Now in the Yorkshire Museum.

In honor of the divine imperial house, Silvius (?) Has Spartus (?) Dedicated to the god Sucellus (this). The space (for the inscription) was made available by decision of the city council.

This is a Votive inscription on weathered white limestone with damaged edges. Found in 1914 at the ancient site (Augusta Rauricorum) August, Switzerland now housed at the Roman Museum August. It’s dated to the middle of the 2nd century.

SARREBOURG

DEO SVCELLO NANTOSVELTE BELLAVSVS MASS FILIVS V (OTVM) S (OLVIT) L (IBENS) M (ERITO)

To the god Sucellus and Nantosuelta, Bellausus, son of Massa, paid his vow willingly and deservedly

A gray sandstone Relief of Sucellus and Nantosuelta found In Sarrebourg, near Metz, France we find a Nantosuelta, wearing a long gown is standing to the left. In her left hand, she holds a small house-shaped object with two circular holes and a peaked roof. Her right-hand holds a patera which she is tipping onto a cylindrical altar. To the right, Sucellus stands, bearded, in a tunic with a cloak on his right shoulder. He holds his mallet in his right hand and an olla in his left. Above the figures is a dedicatory inscription and below them in very low relief a raven. Dated to the first century or the start of the second century. Housed at Muess de Metz. This is the only illustration of Sucellos and Natosuelta together with and inscription. it’s also the only one naming Nantosuelta.

In 1923 an airport construction was put on hold in Metz, France. The discovery of what is thought to be a burial site is where this bronze ring was found along with burnt bones, brick pieces, along with Urns. Dating BC 199 – AD 799?. Nothing else is can be found.

DEO SVCELLO GELLIA SECVND [A] V (OTVM) S (OLVIT) L (IBENS) M (ERITO)

This is a Votive altar found in 1856 not much is know about this one as it was in a private collection in Vienna Austria and went missing around 1888 and can not be pictured.

Found in 1853 this is a Stone Votive inscription found in Switzerland. It has come up missing and nothing more is known and is also not pictured.
